Hi there! At our surf shop in Lagos, one of the most common questions we get from first-timers is: “How many lessons will it take for me to learn how to surf?” The answer depends on a few things - your fitness level, natural balance, and how comfortable you are in the ocean. But don’t worry! We’re here to guide you through the process with group and private lessons, tailored to your skill level and goals.

Group surf lessons: learn, improve, and have fun together

Group lessons are a great way to learn the basics in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. It’s also a chance to meet new people and share the joy of surfing with others. Here’s what you can expect:

The first steps: lessons 1–2

Your first surf lesson focuses on building a strong foundation. Our instructors take a step-by-step approach, starting on the sand before heading into the water. You’ll learn:

Paddling & positioning – How to paddle efficiently and stay balanced.

Pop-up practice – Mastering the technique of standing up on your board.

Safety & surf etiquette – Essential tips for staying safe and sharing the waves.

Riding your first wave! – Most students stand up and catch a wave during their first lesson! 🎉

In these first lessons, the goal is to build confidence and help you get comfortable in the water. You’ll probably fall a lot, but that’s part of the fun!

Building skills: lessons 3–5

Once you’ve got the basics down, the next lessons focus on improving your skills and catching unbroken waves. This is when things get exciting! Your instructor will help you:

Pop-up smoothly & stay balanced – Less wobbling, more riding!

Improve your stance – For better control and longer rides.

Turn your board – Start learning to make smooth turns on the wave.

Read the ocean – Understand how to position yourself and choose the best waves.

Most beginners start catching green waves (unbroken waves) after 5-7 lessons, especially if they practice in between sessions.

The fast track: why private surf lessons are worth it

If you want faster progress and personalized coaching, private lessons are your best option. In a private session, you get the full attention of an instructor, which means:

Tailored coaching – Focus 100% on your specific needs and goals.

More time on the board – No waiting for other students to take turns.

Faster progress – You’ll often achieve in 3–4 private lessons what might take 5–7 in a group setting.

Private lessons are perfect for anyone who prefers individual attention or wants to work on specific skills like catching green waves or improving their turns.

We always pick the best beach for the day

To give you the best experience, our instructors choose the beach with the most beginner-friendly conditions for each lesson. Every beach is different, and wave conditions change daily. We assess the conditions and select the safest and most suitable beach so that you can learn in the best possible environment.

Meia Praia and Porto de Mós are two of our favorite beaches for beginners, thanks to their gentle waves and sandy bottoms. When conditions allow, we might also head to Arrifana Beach, one of the most consistent beginner spots on the west coast. This approach ensures that you’re always surfing in waves that help you progress faster.

How long does it take to “get good”?

Surfing is a lifelong journey, and even experienced surfers are always learning and improving. If your goal is to catch green waves, turn your board, and feel confident, it usually takes about 10–15 lessons combined with regular practice.

Progress isn’t always linear - you’ll have great days and humbling ones. The key is to stay patient, practice consistently, and enjoy the process.
